How Do You Eat an Elephant?

My friend and mentor Camilla asked me an odd question while we were preparing for a particularly daunting Sunday worship set.

"Jasmyn," she said in her melodious Brazilian accent, "How do you eat an elephant?"

The quizzical look I gave her made her chuckle. "Tell me, how do you eat an elephant?" she pressed.

"Um... I'm not quite sure."

She gave me a bemused smile and a nudge on the shoulder. "One bite at a time," she finally answered.

This seemingly silly question and answer has become one of my greatest life lessons.

In life, we are often faced with tasks that appear to be insurmountable. You may have an astronomical sales goal to make, a deadline to hit in record time, a gargantuan project looming over your head, or some other goal that may appear as difficult and daunting as... well, eating an elephant.

Seeing these tasks from a big-picture view can easily intimidate us or instill that ever- relentless fear of failure. However, instead of letting worry or self-doubt creep in, it is much wiser to simply take the first bite. That $25,000 sales goal starts with selling your first $25. That article due in 24 hours begins with that first sentence. That mammoth project will only be finished at the pace of completing the very first step.

By breaking up what seems to be an impossible assignment into several smaller milestones and completing them accordingly, you'll find that not only will you have finished eating your elephant, but you just may have room to celebrate with dessert.
